Constipation & medication side effects

Constipation is a recognised side effect of a number of medicines available to buy in the pharmacy or health store, or on prescription from your GP. These include:

  • pillsCodeine based painkillers
  • Antacids used to treat indigestion (particularly those containing aluminium)
  • Iron tablets taken to help anaemia
  • Some types of blood pressure medication
  • Anti-epilepsy drugs
  • Drugs used to treat Parkinson’s disease
  • Antipsychotic drugs (used to treat schizophrenia, anxiety etc)
  • Diuretics (water tablets)

How to treat constipation brought on by medication

If you are experiencing problems with constipation after starting on new medication, it may be worth seeing your pharmacist or doctor to discuss the possibility of altering your dosage or switching to a different product. However you should never alter your medications because of constipation without first talking it through with a healthcare professional.

You may also need to modify your diet and take more exercise to help deal with this particular problem.
